LIVE FROM FLAT V by Josh Smith
A GOOD REP
In the next few columns, Josh Smith discusses three tools he uses to strengthen his approach to improvisation. These three things tell better stories with a solo, all of which have nothing to do with note choice or melodic information. They are: repetition, where he will repeat a phrase and establish the line as a foundational motif to build upon; call and response, wherein he “answers” lines he plays with complimentary statements; and “handcuffs,” which he envisions as painting himself into a musical box. Setingt limits on where and what to can play, forces one to find new alternatives.
