As we have been discussing over the past several columns, a great way to add melodic and harmonic variety to a guitar solo over a blues progression is by incorporating the use of such devices as chromaticism, diminished chords and ii – V – I turnarounds. Each approach has the potential to yield musi-cally surprising results and can carry the listener — and the player — to unexpected places.
