LIVE FROM FLAT V by Josh Smith
ZEROING IN
Josh Smith continues his exploration of utilizing different tools for strengthening the substance of our improvisation. We began with a look at how to use repetition as an effective soloing tool, and last month we used what Josh calls “handcuffs,” which is to restrict oneself to an area of the fretboard or a specific technique. As contrary as it may sound, setting limits on the amount of notes and positions one can use will actually inspire creative choices, both melodically and rhythmically.
